  33.      Lomustine should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed
  34. container.

  38.      This medication belongs to a group of drugs known as nitrosourea
  39. alkylating agents.  It is used to treat a variety of cancers.  Lomustine is
  40. thought to work by binding to the rapidly growing cancer cells, preventing
  41. their multiplication and growth.

  43. TREATMENT
  44.  
  45.      To help prevent nausea, you should take lomustine on an empty stomach
  46. (unless your doctor directs otherwise).
  47.      The patient is usually required to take this medication as a single dose
  48. once a week.  The total weekly dose consists of a number of capsules of
  49. different strengths and colors, which are all taken at the same time.  The
  50. timing of each weekly dose is very important; be sure you completely
  51. understand your doctor's instructions on how and when this medication should
  52. be taken.

  54. SIDE EFFECTS
  55.  
  56.      Minor.
  57.  
  58.      Nausea and vomiting may occur three to six hours after taking a dose of
  59. lomustine; these symptoms usually last less than 24 hours.  The use of
  60. lomustine may also cause hair loss, which is reversible when the medication is
  61. stopped.

  63.      Major.
  64.  
  65.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  66. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  67. chills, confusion, decreased coordination, difficult or painful urination,
  68. disorientation, fever, itching, loss of appetite, lethargy, mouth sores, sore
  69. throat, unusual bleeding or bruising, weakness, or yellowing of the eyes or
  70. skin.  These side effects may even appear several weeks after the last dose is
  71. taken.

  73. INTERACTIONS
  74.  
  75.      Lomustine should not interact with other medications if it is used
  76. according to directions.

  78. WARNINGS
  79.  
  80.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  81. any medications, especially to lomustine, carmustine, or streptozocin.
  82.      * Before starting to take this medication, be sure to tell your doctor if
  83. you now have or if you have ever had blood disorders, chronic or recurrent
  84. infections, or kidney disease.
  85.      * Before having surgery or any other medical or dental treatment, be sure
  86. to tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication.
  87.      * You should not receive any immunizations or vaccinations while taking
  88. this medication.  Lomustine blocks the effectiveness of vaccines, which could
  89. result in an overwhelming infection if a live-virus vaccine is administered.
  90. Be sure to tell your doctor you are taking lomostine before you are given any
  91. immunizations or vaccinations.
  92.      * Lomustine can lower your platelet count, which can decrease your body's
  93. ability to form blood clots.  You should, therefore, be especially careful
  94. while brushing your teeth, flossing, or using toothpicks, razors, or
  95. fingernail scissors.  Try to avoid falls and other injuries.  Your doctor may
  96. also order periodic laboratory tests to monitor your blood.
  97.      * Lomustine can decrease fertility in both men and women.
  98.      * Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Lomustine has been reported to
  99. cause birth defects in both animals and humans whose mothers received the drug
  100. during pregnancy.  The risks should be discussed with your doctor.  Also, tell
  101. your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  Small amounts of lomustine
  102. pass into breast milk.
